2. Productive Struggle” is an important concept in learning anything, especially math. When teachers show students how to solve problems or give them answers, the students are not learning to critically think. What is even worse is students get the message that they cannot do it, so their teacher has to do it for them or provide them with the algorithm (formula/steps) for them to do it on their own, which depletes their confidence and creativity in math. Mathematical Practice 1 is “Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.” How will you help students engage in that important productive struggle to make sense of problems and how will you help them persevere in solving them without giving them the answer or algorithm?
