1) Find a favorite movie or a piece of writing that you thing is ahhhhmazing. Share it with the class by linking it here using the Link button or the Mashup button for videos in the tool bar. You may have to click the drop down menu to access all your tool bars.
2) Using our writing tip in this unit, borrow a literary element from the example you picked. If you borrow the plot, make it your own. If you borrow a character, make it your own. If you borrow…. you get it, make it your own.
3) Now go back to the writing and change the setting, completely. It could be changing an apartment to a mansion, a country scene to a city, a cloudy day to a perfect beach day. Take time to immerse yourself fully into a setting of your choice. Close your eyes. Be there. Run through each of your senses and note what you see and smell and taste and feel and hear. A good exercise is to sit quietly and be your character in that setting. Think what the character would notice about the place and the weather. Think about the character’s mood, emotional state, in the scene you are about to change. Jot down at least three phrases for each sense. Then think how to reword so that the adjectives and verbs you choose reflect the character’s mind-set.If you tend to race through setting descriptionor leave it out, for the most partmake yourself slow down and smell the roses. Then describe how they smell. Time spent like this is not wasted time. But writing boring description is.
