1. What observations have you noted regarding underrepresented populations in health care leadership roles and/or in your organization and how do your observations compare with Salsberg’s (2021) findings?
2. Use the interactive tool in the Education Trust (2020) article, Advanced Coursework in Your State to see how your state (or Virginia) rates regarding Black and Latino students pursuing advanced coursework. What might these findings suggest about the barriers and opportunities that underrepresented populations have to pursue careers in health care in your state (or Virginia)?
3. What purposeful and intentional design aspect of the ChicagoCHEC program [Taylor (2019)] did you find useful in removing barriers that address underrepresented populations and why?
4. Marcelin et al (2019) list seven strategies for mitigating unconscious bias in Figure
2. Which of the seven strategies are you currently using within your organization and why did your organization choose to use this strategy? If your organization is not using any strategies, which of the seven strategies would you like to see implemented in your organization and why?
5. Use the Kaiser Case Study (2021): Who did Dr. Pearl invite and engage to be part of the team that frames the problem and solution(s) andwhy did Dr. Pearl select these members to be part of the Guiding Coalition (step 2)?
6. Use the Kaiser Case Study (2021): How did Dr. Pearl Develop the Strategic Vision (step 3) for this work and subsequently Communicate the Vision (step 4) to support and enact the vision?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Salsberg’s (2021) study found that underrepresented populations, including women and racial/ethnic minorities, are still underrepresented in leadership positions in healthcare. The study identified several factors that contribute to this, including implicit bias, lack of access to leadership development opportunities, and structural barriers that limit the career advancement of underrepresented groups.
According to the Education Trust (2020) article, Virginia has a mixed record when it comes to Black and Latino students pursuing advanced coursework. While the state has made progress in increasing the number of Black and Latino students taking advanced courses, there is still a significant gap between these students and their White peers. This suggests that there may be systemic barriers that limit the opportunities for underrepresented populations to pursue careers in healthcare in Virginia.
The ChicagoCHEC program’s intentional design to provide mentorship and training to underrepresented students pursuing careers in healthcare is a useful strategy for removing barriers. By providing support and resources to students from underrepresented backgrounds, the program aims to increase diversity in healthcare fields and address health disparities in underserved communities.
Marcelin et al (2019) list several strategies for mitigating unconscious bias, including awareness training, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and hiring practices that prioritize diversity. It is difficult for me to determine which of these strategies an organization is using, but organizations can benefit from using a combination of these strategies to address unconscious bias and promote diversity and inclusion.
In the Kaiser Case Study (2021), Dr. Pearl invited and engaged a diverse group of individuals to be part of the Guiding Coalition, including physicians, nurses, administrators, and patients. He selected these members to ensure a diversity of perspectives and to build consensus around the problem and potential solutions.
Dr. Pearl developed the strategic vision for the project by engaging stakeholders and incorporating their feedback. He communicated the vision through a variety of channels, including presentations and meetings, to ensure that all stakeholders were aware of the goals and objectives of the project. Additionally, he worked to build consensus and support for the vision by engaging stakeholders in the development process.
