In this week’s readings, Shaw (2013) seems to be arguing for a new approach to activism; this week’s Crash Course video emphasizes the changes social media have had on how we interact with the world. The discussion this week asks you to consider social media and how it has affected and been used by social justice movements. In short, the strategies and tactics employed by social justice movements are changing, for a variety of reasons.
In order to examine the changes to social justice strategies and tactics (as we will do in the final two weeks of this course), we must first describe the previous generations’ methods. After reviewing all of the required learning materials in the course up to and including this week respond to the following bullet points in a 3-4 page paper (excluding the title page and reference page).
Introduction: In your own words, what is a social justice movement? Why is it important to study social justice movements?
What are the 3-4 most important concepts or ideas covered so far in the course?
For each concept or idea, identify 1) how it is used by social justice movements and 2) why you identified it as one of the 3-4 most important concepts.
Using the concepts/ideas you identified, how do you think social justice movements have worked in the past? How do you think they’re working now? How much change has happened in how social justice movements operate?
Conclusion: Given what you have read and discussed so far in this class, do you think that social justice movements have been effective at producing social change? Why or why not? (Note, this is something we will talk about next week, so not looking for you to have answers here—just for you to draw some conclusions based on your experience).
Include in-text citations in APA format for at least 4 of the required or recommended readings from the first 6 weeks of the course. You may also use scholarly or other credible sources from your own research if you wish.
Include a references page at the end of your paper with complete APA references for each source that you quoted or paraphrased in your paper.
Turnitin will be used to evaluate this assignment prior to grading. Please review the syllabus for more information about the use of Turnitin in this course.
