The midterm is a multifaceted project that will be done individually and will focus on our course’s secondary text, Our Voices: Essays in Culture, Ethnicity, and Communication

First, each student will select an article from the text by the due date shown in Canvas. Selection will take place in our Canvas course on a “first-come/first-serve” basis, meaning once an article is chosen online via the directions shown, it is no longer available. As such, you are strongly encouraged to make your selection as early as possible. Once article is chosen, you will strive to become an “expert” on the subject matter by reading and studying the article in the text, taking notes on its content.

Next, locate at least two (2) scholarly, academic articles in peer-reviewed journals or book chapters on the same subject / topic. Please ensure you understand this requirement. Make note that you are required to save the two primary articles as digital copies in PDF format and then submit them on the due date, along with your research paper.

In sum, at a minimum your References will consist of the main article chosen from Our Voices, plus two additional academic sources, and likely the main text in our course, Understanding Intercultural Communication (UIC). You are welcome to cite more than this, but you are only required to submit PDF copies of the two additional, scholarly articles. Any questions about this requirement should be asked of your professor sooner rather than later.

To assist with the organization of your research paper, consider highlighting two to three main ideas from the Our Voices article. What did you find most interesting and intriguing? What was confusing and/or complex? Use ideas from the article to clearly connect to our studies and discussions of relevant intercultural communication concepts from the Understanding Intercultural Communication text. As you read and study, be processing your central idea (the thesis statement) for your paper.
