1) Which institution (Congress, The Presidency, The Courts, or The Bureaucracy) is the strongest in modern American politics? Why? Is this what the founders intended? Does it matter? 2: Policy Memo: How will this assignment help you as you prepare for future workplace memo needs? What was your favorite or least favorite part of it? 3) Some questions to consider related to Education Policy (not an exhaustive list, but something to start with): 1. Tenure: Is teacher tenure necessary to protect academic freedom and promote job security, or does it make it difficult to dismiss ineffective teachers? Should the tenure system be reformed or abolished altogether? 2. Student Loans: Should the government forgive student loan debt, and if so, to what extent? What impact would this have on the economy and education system? 3. Charter Schools: Are charter schools a viable alternative to traditional public schools, or do they exacerbate inequality and drain resources from public education? Should charter schools be expanded or restricted? 4. Standardized Testing: Are standardized tests an effective measure of student achievement and teacher effectiveness, or do they promote a narrow view of learning and encourage teaching to the test? Should standardized testing be eliminated or reformed? 5. Why was/wasn’t the FYE program at WIU helpful to you (if applicable). What would you like to see done differently with programs like this one? Pick one of these for your discussion post this week 🙂
