Purpose: The focus of this case study is to explore the theories and evidence-based frameworks used in patient care. This assignment will be based on the scenario provided.
Directions:
Review the scenario below.
Choose a theory or an evidence-based framework and develop a slide presentation based on how you would implement an evidence-based change using the theory or framework you have chosen.
The presentation should include the evidence for the change and why this framework was chosen.
A minimum of three scholarly citations must be used to provide evidence for the change and be included in the presentation references.
- References are to be in appropriate APA format on a separate reference slide.
- In addition, you must clearly identify the evidence-based framework and the reasons why this framework was chosen for implementation.
SCENARIO: You have just transferred to a new position as a registered nurse on a medical-surgical unit. While you are in orientation, you are assigned an 87 year old female patient who needs a blood transfusion due to acute blood loss anemia. When you prepare for the transfusion process, the RN preceptor assigned to you states that you must assess the patient every 30 minutes during the blood transfusion, including taking vital signs. When you question the timing of the assessment—stating that in your previous position at another hospital, assessments were done every 15 minutes during blood transfusions—the RN preceptor tells you that 30-minute assessment is the hospital policy and you must follow hospital policy. Although this is the current hospital policy, you believe that current evidence dictates more frequent assessments. You feel this is an area where an evidence-based practice change may be needed.
