What will you do:
Watch the video below and read over the article, linked below it. This is showing you the effects King Tides have on the San Diego coast, particularly in Imperial Beach.
Personal Replies (10 pts):
Once you have watched the video and read the article below, click reply to this discussion board and answer the following three questions:
What is a king tide? (What conditions are happening that cause them to occur?)
Be thorough in this response.
- Hint: think elliptical orbit
Please note that the phrase “King Tide” is more of a common phrase and is not a term always used by the scientific community. Because it is used so commonly to describe this phenomena by the general public, I am including it here. Please also be aware that King Tides and storm surges are different. We have been experiencing a lot of storm surges this year that we have not experienced often in past winter and spring seasons.
- What is one thing that stood out to you from this article?
- Have you ever thought about King Tides, or tides in general having an effect on your life here in San Diego?
Now that you have an understanding of tides and, specifically King Tides, and how they affect us locally here in San Diego, how will you work towards being a more informed, active citizen and member of society?
- What is one way you could share your knowledge about these tides?
- What is one realistic solution you can recommend to the city of Imperial Beach on how to better deal with these tides? (key word here realistic, suggesting people move and leave their homes is not realistic)
- You will have to post your own reply before you can see what your peers have written.
