Step 1. Choose, find, or create image files (.jpgs) of 5-10 visual elements representing your identity. These 5-10 key visual elements should include at least one example from each of the following categories.
1 Pictures of favorite activities/hobbies, pets, books, movies, TV shows, food, beverages, etc.
2 Images of the garments, outfit, hairstyle, and accessories you’ll be shown wearing in the portrait
3 A representation of a geographic region that is meaningful to you in the form of a map, a cityscape, landscape, or garden, park, or public space.
4 A type of architectural structure or interior space that embodies your personality/interests
5 “Swatches” of colors, patterns, and shapes that will help emphasize details or direct a viewer’s attention
Step 2. Combine the image files of your visual elements on a PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides (or other program) slide. When combining your images, take time to arrange, re-size, overlap, and organize these images into a composition. Emphasize the importance of some visual elements compared to others by modifying the scale, placement, and position of these images. When you have created your slide, print or export your slide as a .jpg or .png image file (or take a screenshot, which will automatically create an image file of your collage).
Step 3. Compose a brief description (at least 100 words) that (1) identifies the elements in your self-portrait proposal, (2) explains why you chose them, and (3) briefly discusses how their placement in the composition relates to their importance for projecting your identity.
Step 4. Click the Reply button provided on this page to create a post. In the text box that appears, embed the image file (.jpg or .png) of your self-portrait as a new post to this discussion and add your description from Step 3.
STEP 5. After embedding the image and typing in your description, click the Post Reply button to submit your post.
