Dietary guidelines for Americans and MyPlate food guidelines systems can help people follow a healthy eating pattern by recommendations about components of a healthy and nutritionally adequate diet to help promote health and prevent chronic disease for current and future guidelines. Dietary guidelines key recommendation for healthy eating patterns should be applied in their entirety, given the interconnected relationship that each dietary component can have with others.
I do try and follow some of the guidelines for healthy eating. A few months ago, my daughter and I completed a program called “Project Happy” where we learned about MyPlate and proper food portions. We both received plates that measures out our portions of food. We learned how to recipes using fresh food of all different colors and varieties. We worked out together over zoom learning how to read labels, which foods keep you fuller longer and we even grew our own vegetables. I now get out and exercise more and even encourage my family in these outings. I’m much happier and my clothes doesn’t feel as snug. My mood has improved and my energy level is much higher.
The factors that has been the biggest influences on my eating behaviors would have to be stress. Something that i don’t handle very well. And when that happens, I usually eat. Eating has been a comfort of sorts since childhood. When I’m happy, I eat. when sad, the same thing. So it became a pattern in my relationship with food. A love, hate relationship of sorts.
MyPlate and nutrition labels help me by one helping me portion control and making sure that I’m eating from all the major four food groups. And nutrition labels for packaged foods reflect new scientific information, including the link between diet and chronic diseases. The new label will make it easier for consumers to make better informed food choices.
Yes, i do look at food labels. I look out for sodium because I have high blood pressure and want to keep my Bp at normal levels. I also make sure to look at the servings per container, since I prepare meals for a family of 4, is real important. I also look at how much sugar is added, as well as the updated daily value of nutrients provided in each serving. But the most interesting fact on the label that I found was the “Change in Nutrients” this is very important to me because the minerals provided in the food sustains us and provides nourishment, energy and strong bones. So when a change in the nutrient is listed or made, i wonder how can I replace the nutrient? Yes, I plan to continue looking at labels and how to understand them properly, so my family and I can get the most nutrients out of the foods we consume.
The changes that i would like to make to my food choices are to eat more leafy greens and fruits on a daily basis. Also I would like to cut back some on eating red meat, maybe limiting it to 2 to 3 days a week. I would like to work on my habit of having soda or juice along with my meals. Lately, for the past two weeks, I have been replacing soda with water or green tea. And I must admit, i don’t feel as tired.
My strategies for eating healthier are to continuing using Myplate for smaller portions, eat from the major four food groups, make sure to read the labels to know what is in the foods we’re eating and how many servings are recommended per serving. Remembering that what I put into my family’s body can either promote health or death.
