Medical Oversight: A Registered Nurse in any area must have a physician’s order to do anything for a patient. Applying oxygen, and administering medications all require an order from a physician. EMS personnel do not have this luxury. They cannot immediately contact a physician for every patient. It’s for this reason, that every system needs a medical director. A physician can create a “Standing Orders”. Those are pre-written orders for EMS to perform without having to contact medical directions. Please create a thread on what you think the role of the physician medical director should be. Should it be monitoring ALL calls? Should it be designing protocols and standards for personnel to follow? Or should there be more active physician involvement in the direct care of patients? As usual, please start thinking critically to promote a thoughtful discussion.
