Among other things, Leo Robson in “The Unruly Genius of Joyce Carol Oates” discusses uses/depictions of violence in Oates’ novels: the ways in which she portrays the relations between violence and individuals (how individuals are influenced by violence, how individuals respond to violence, if individuals are solely responsible for the violence they may commit, etc). The same questions of the relations between violence and individuals are explored in Chapter “Reconnoiter” (Page 86-115) of Pursuit through Miriam’s father’s character. Based on this chapter, discuss and analyze how Oates portrays the father’s mind and the ways in which an individual like him becomes violent/commits violence. After describing and analyzing these portrayals, make your own ethical evaluations of the father character. Make sure to quote the novel as you answer the question.
