The Belhaven Dissertation template is structured according to a five-chapter dissertation model (Belhaven University, n.d.). In addition to the five chapters, the template includes several other components as described below.

Title page – includes a title, school name, author, and date.

Abstract – provides a brief overview of the dissertation, including the topic summary, research question, data collection methods, review of the data results, and interpretation of the outcome.

  • Table of Contents – lists all contents with page numbers for ease of location.
  • Chapter One – This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the dissertation, which includes an introduction to the topic, problem statement, purpose statement, research question, hypotheses or propositions, conceptual framework, significance of the study, assumptions and biases, delimitations, limitations, definition of terms, overview of the research design, and a summary of the organization of the dissertation.
  • Chapter Two – This is a literature review. The purpose of the literature review is to show a level of expertise in the topics related to the dissertation, identify a gap in the literature, and develop a conceptual framework associated with the research design. The sequence of the literature review should begin with a broad overview of the topic and gradually narrow down to the specific subject and gap addressed in the dissertation.
  • Chapter Three – This chapter discusses the research methodology and should be specific enough so that another researcher could replicate the study. It will include information about the research tradition, research questions or propositions, research design, population and sample, sampling procedure, instrumentation, validity, reliability, data collection, data analysis, and ethical considerations.
  • Chapter Four – In this chapter the author presents the data as collected following the methodology described in Chapter Three. This includes a description of the participant demographics, a presentation of the data, and a presentation and discussion of the findings.
  • Chapter Five – This chapter describes the findings and conclusions of the research study. It also highlights the limitations of the study, the implications for practice, along with the implications for the study and recommendations for further research.
  • References – This section will list all references from the dissertation, including word-for-word and paraphrase citations.
  • Appendix – Since it is optional, the dissertation may or may not include this section. It would include supplemental information that is necessary to support the study.
