My quote that is bullshit is “America Runs on Dunkin”

As discussed, often, in class:  your first essay will argue why a particular example of speech or writing meets Frankfurt’s criteria for bullshit.  I don’t care what you use, but I have expressed a strong suggestion that we all move on from discussing Trump or any ads that were covered in class discussion or any examples of bullshit arising from basic forms of courtesy.  [The problem with using anything related to Trump is that he is such a polarizing figure, folks often lose control of their poise as they write and argue more from emotion than fact.  Also, claims that he makes are often made sincerely, despite their seeming outlandish to others.  This tendency means that some folks react to his claims, when they see them, with ‘bullshit!’  But if he believes his claims sincerely, if he sees them as true, then they do not meet Frankfurt’s criteria at all.]

In any case, choose a piece of speech or an ad as your example of bullshit.  Do NOT quote a long speech or the entire commercial—pick a single line from the speech or the product slogan that exemplifies bullshit in that speech.  In the essay, you will explain why your particular example meets some (or perhaps all) of Frankfurt’s criteria for what bullshit is.  If your example doesn’t quite fit some of his criteria, be sure to talk about that in your argument.
