Film as Art WEEK7
Initial Post Instructions
Films such as Jurassic Park (1993, dir. Steven Spielberg), The Matrix (1999, dir. The Wachowskis), and Avatar (2009, dir. James Cameron) have redefined what is possible in cinema through storytelling, visual innovation, and philosophical depth. More recently, box office hits like Barbie (2023), Top Gun: Maverick (2022), and Oppenheimer (2023) have shown that mainstream films can also serve as meaningful works of art.
Choose a film released within the last 10 years that you believe strengthens the argument that film remains a vital and powerful form of art. For your initial post, address the following:
● Include the name of the film and the director.
● Explain why you think this film qualifies as art.
● Do not just ‘ re-tell’ the storyline.
Refer to our readings in your posts, and discuss your chosen film, including at least 2 of the following elements:
● Film Structure
● Cinematography
● Special Effects
● Animation
● Music or other artistic techniques involved in making the film powerful.
Respond to the following in your posts, as well:
● What impact does this film have on viewers’ lives or perspectives?
● Is there a ‘purpose’, such as philosophical/ social messaging, in the film’s appeal?
● Include a statement from an actor, director, or critic that supports your viewpoint.
Art as Cultural Conversation WEEK8
For the initial post, address both of the following parts:
Part 1:
Choose a work of art (visual, performance, or musical) that combines elements from two or more cultures.
● How does this piece demonstrate the blending of traditions?
● What message do you think it communicates about cultural exchange?
● Is the combination harmonious, provocative, or something else?
and
Part 2:
Now, share a work of art—whether music, visual art, literature, theater, architecture, or photography—that comes from an international tradition outside your own cultural background.
● What did you learn from encountering this artwork?
● How does it help you better understand the role and value of the humanities in expressing the beliefs, values, and experiences of other cultures?
