Assessment 2
Case Study Analysis – Part 1

Instructions: Complete Part 1 of an in-depth analysis of the case study. Your 6-8 page analysis will focus on the problems facing the organization and the approach(es) it used to position itself for the necessary changes.

Introduction:

Note: The assessments in this course build upon the work you have completed in the previous assessments. Therefore, complete the assessments in the order in which they are presented and wait until you receive feedback, so you may incorporate it into later assessments.

A clear understanding of the need for change and the nature and extent of the change is necessary to communicating and heightening awareness within the organization and gaining the support of all internal and external stakeholders. Healthcare leaders must demonstrate that change is necessary to ensure the future success of the organization and its mission and begin the change management process with an analysis of complex, dynamic processes and organizational components.

This assessment provides an opportunity for you to examine the internal and external factors driving change in an organization, the ways the organization responds to the need for change, and the ways it heightens awareness of that need.

Note: This assessment must be completed prior to Assessments 3 and 4. You must complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.

Reminder: In this second assessment, you'll select a healthcare organization (either your current employer or the example provided in the case study Healthassist, Inc.: Leading through a Pandemic (Chapter 8, pages 317–333 of your Organizational Change text)).

You are highly encouraged to select your current employer on which to base your work and, if you choose this path, make sure your workplace completes the Learner and Employer Acknowledgement and Release Form [PDF].

Instructions

For this assessment, you will identify the problems facing either your organization or Healthassist, Inc.: Leading through a Pandemic and analyze the approach(es) used to help the organization position itself for the necessary changes. Refer to the Assessment 2 description and rubric for detailed instructions as to how to complete this assessment.

After reading the case study “Healthassist, Inc.: Leading through a Pandemic” or examining your own organization complete the following:

  • Use the congruence model to describe the inputs to the organization.
  • Identify the multiple elements of the problem and break down each of those elements, showing causal relationships.
  • Separate and categorize the key elements into manageable components.
  • Assess the needs of the community as they relate to the organization.
  • Analyze the five approaches used to heighten awareness of the need for change in an organization as described in your Organizational Change text on pages 175–177.
  • Synthesize your understanding of these approaches with the case study.
  • Explain how the organization challenged the status quo or created a sense of crisis to prepare the organization for change.
  • Identify how the organization energized and motivated others to get everyone on board with the change.

Note: As you revise your writing, check out the resources listed on the Writing Center’s Writing Support page.
