Choose a Florida neighborhood to observe. Use your observations in conjunction with the crime prevention concepts discussed in class regarding the importance of environmental design in order to assess the probable success of the neighborhood’s crime-prevention capabilities. Does the neighborhood have physical design features conducive to preventing crime? In order to help address this question, draw most specifically upon the work of Oscar Newman and note the following:

Discuss the territoriality of the community. Tie your assessment to specific features of the environment (i.e., boundary markers, signs, designated space, etc.).

Discuss the potential for natural surveillance in the community. Tie your assessment to specific features of the environment (i.e. street layout, access routes, land use, building type/design, etc.).

Discuss the image of the area. Link your assessment to your specific observations of order v. disorder.

Discuss the milieu of the area. What are the surrounding areas? Do they help or hurt the neighborhood in question (in terms of crime prevention)? Explain.
