DB 4

In this discussion you will evaluate the communication surrounding a failed change initiative, either the one that you discussed in Discussion Forum 1 or another failed change initiative. Post a response of between 500 and 700 words (five paragraphs, plus references), using the following as headings.

  • Introduction. Provide a brief description of the failed change initiative plus a problem statement for this posting.
  • Analysis of the Failed Change Initiative. Identify the communication strategy used during the failed change initiative. Choose from among the five discussed in Chapter 20: spray and pray, tell and sell, underscore and explore, identify and reply, or withhold and uphold. Include specific information on directionality, content, and channel.
  • My New Communication Plan. At this point, you have identified multiple points of failure in the communication plan used. Now, create a new communication plan using your knowledge from this module. Be sure to cover communication directionality, content, and channel as well as the communication strategy you would use.
  • Increasing the Sense of Urgency. Identify why and how this new plan would increase the sense of urgency that employees have about the change.
  • Motivating Employees. Finish your post with a discussion of how this new communication plan would motivate employees to engage in the process of change in a way that would have helped the initial change be successful.
  • References. Include a references section that provides complete citations, in proper APA style, for all your sources.

In Discussion Forum 5, post your response to the following discussion question. Reply to at least two classmates’ responses by the date indicated in the Course Calendar.

Introduction to the Activity

Whether an organizational change effort is led by an external change agent or an internal change agent, a change plan has to be developed after diagnosis has occurred. The readings in this module have introduced you to the process of developing a change plan and the classifications of change plans based on who is involved or what issues are the focus of change. This exercise will help you apply concepts you have learned in this module.

Your Response

In this activity, we will examine the leader’s role in choosing interventions and creating a change plan. Cummings and Worley proposed four classes of interventions based on what issues they are designed to resolve (Chapter 13). The four are:

  • Human process interventions
  • Human resource interventions
  • Technostructural interventions
  • Strategic Interventions
