DEVELOPING NEW BEHAVIORS, DISUSSION WEEK 8

If you have children or have worked with children, you know that they are in a constant process of learning. If you think back to your own childhood, you may realize that some areas of functioning required more effort than others in order for you to master skills or learn a new behavior. For children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), one area of behavior that is a significant challenge is social skills. Social skills deficits are a fundamental aspect of ASD on which any behavior analyst working with children with ASD must focus.

For this Discussion, you will evaluate a scenario of a child with ASD and analyze and discuss potential interventions that could help the child increase social interactions

To Prepare

Review the Learning Resources for this week, including the required weekly media programs, to gain an understanding of establishing new behaviors through imitation, shaping, and chaining. Note: It is critical for you to review all media for this week prior to completing this Discussion.
Review the following scenario:
A high functioning 9-year-old child with autism spectrum disorder, Level 1 (i.e., IQ > 100, academic skills commensurate with age and grade placement) has apparent difficulty in initiating social interactions.

Based on the scenario, search the Walden Library and/or the internet to find research on procedures that have been used to effectively increase social skill behavior in children with ASD.
By Day 4 of Week 8
Post an evaluation of each of the following interventions as a method of increasing social interaction: (a) imitation/modeling, (b) shaping, and (c) forward or backward chaining.

Read your colleagues’ postings.
