With your Evaluative Writing Assignment, you have already demonstrated your understanding of evaluative writing and establishing criteria for assessment. The next step is to apply this thinking to the composition of a 3-4 page rough draft. You are free to take the criteria that you have created for a film and apply it specifically to a film of your choice, or you may opt to perform a different evaluation. You could also opt to expand your evaluation of the episodes of The Twilight Zone that we watched in class. Consider the following additional options as you brainstorm, either for a film review or other type of evaluative writing:

  • Evaluate a favorite piece of media (film, book, album, etc.) using specific criteria to get at the heart of why you like it.
  • Defend an unpopular opinion: do you like something that most people dislike? Dislike something that most people like? Use your criteria and evaluations based on that criteria to make your case.
  • Compare and contrast two different yet similar products, showing the strengths and weaknesses of each to determine a superior product. This can be two different brands of anything.
