This week's focus is on how group memberships influence you as a human services professional, specifically as a leader. You have thought about how your group memberships influence your sense of identity and experiences within your community, so now consider how they may influence you as a leader.

Engage in a conversation with your course community about the following:

  • How might your group memberships be a benefit and a challenge to you as a human services leader?

As always, if you are relying on someone else's ideas when presenting yours, you should reference their paper, article, et cetera. This includes sharing references to your fellow students' ideas!

Response Guidelines

  • Your Participation: This discussion is an opportunity for you to review the work of other learners to inform your own learning. Your interactions and anything you share should be courteous, succinct, professional, well written, and organized. Communicating clearly with proper grammar and punctuation will foster more and better interactions with your classmates.
  • Your Post: Create a post responding to one of the discussion prompts. Do not create your post as a reply to another post.
  • Responding to Peers: As you respond to at least one classmate, please make sure your response is substantive by sharing your professional experiences and helpful thoughts and feedback about ideas they have shared. Try to comment on those where you feel you have the most useful information to share and consider the following:
    • How have your experiences resonated with their ideas?
    • What can you add to their ideas, building upon the connections you have made to the material so far? Supplement course resources and extend consideration of the topic by including new information or findings from current journal articles, discussing more in-depth critical thinking questions, and providing constructive or corrective feedback or an alternative viewpoint supported by empirical evidence.

GROUP MEMBERSHIP is defined as a collection of people who share a specific characteristic that is socially meaningful, such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, socioeconomic status, or professional membership (Roth et al., 2018). QUESTION 1. Maria is a 37-year-old, cisgender woman Latina immigrant from Mexico who is a devout Catholic, is in a heterosexual marriage with two children and is a human services professional who aspires to found her own non-profit organization. What are Maria’s group memberships?  Enter your response 2. What groups do you belong to? After you finish your list, consider if there are any other groups you also belong to. BIAS is defined as when people favor the members/values of their groups over others (Roth et al., 2018).

All of these groups/social categories contribute to how we see ourselves and how others see us. These categories, and the norms/values that exist within each group, shape how we view the world. That is how we can develop biases. QUESTION 3. Which is an example of a bias? (Select all that apply.) Select all answers that apply a) Women leaders are more likely to be viewed as incompetent than their male counterparts. b) Christian values are the right values. c) Being in a happy marriage can be a protective factor against health issues. d) Children should be raised in a two-parent home.
