This activity is designed to help encourage you to both recognize and better utilize your own writerly practices. Not all writerly practices work for every person. Every writer is unique. However, too often we get stuck doing the same couple things to prepare for an essay. Maybe we sketch out a rough outline or make a quick cluster web of ideas. That’s it. Throughout this course, you’re going to post about the different writerly practices you’re engaging in to help you draft your essays.
Directions
Review the Writerly Practices options below and choose one writerly practice to write about. For each essay’s Writerly Practice Discussion Board, you need to write about a different kind of practice you’re trying out.
Create a Thread to post a 100 – 250 word explanation of a Writerly Practice you are using.
Respond to two classmates’ postings, explaining one or more of the following
What you found valuable in their postings
How they could expand or alter their writerly practices to be more useful
What your experiences have been with the writerly practice they wrote about
Writerly Practice Options
Use Chapter 1 or another chapter from your textbook to help you draft or revise your essay. write short reflection on what you found helpful that book.
Reread your Reading Responses to help you better understand what makes a successful argument. Write short reflection on what you’ve learned from the reading response that will be helpful to your essay.
Create
outline for your essay. Point out where you plan on incorporating ethos, pathos, and logos within your essay.
Meet with a Writing Center tutor or friend or family member to discuss your writing or your essay topic. Describe that meeting and explain how it helped your process with writing this essay.
Study the comments made by your instructor on a previous essay. Explain what you learned from these comments that will help you improve as a writer, and how you’re planning on using those comments to help you as you draft this current essay. Be specific.
Describe how you create space for your writing. How do you create an environment or setting that helps you work through a piece of writing? How specifically does that environment help you? Your writing environment could include location, sound/noise, food & drink, etc.)
Explain what you do when you’re feeling stuck with your writing. What do you do that helps you move forward? (Talking with someone, taking a break, doing a different activity, free writing, etc.).
