This assignment is out of 30 marks and worth 15% of your final Learning outcomes: Through this assignment you will demonstrate:
1. How to choose an appropriate sociological topic to study. 2. How to use an applicable sociological theory to understand the issue 3. How to reference properly
Purpose: Sociologists study social trends to understand what they are, what their origins may be and, if necessary, how to deal with them. For example, if a social trend, say gang violence, poses social threat then sociologists want to know exactly what is happening, why it is occurring and how they can help to eradicate it. The purpose of this exercise is to allow you to identify a social issue, chose an appropriate article on the topic and to use a sociological theory to understand the issue. Find 1article in an academic journal on a sociological topic that relates to race, racialization or ethnicity. Make sure that it interests you (for example, wage gaps, domestic abuse or the “Black Lives Matter’ movement). Complete the following 3 tasks using the academic journal article:
1. Summarize the article.
2. Talk about why it is important to study the topic sociologically. For example, how does the issue affect society and how will studying it aid society and sociological research?
3. Pick a theory or two that help you understand the issue. Use your text to determine what
sociological perspective is suitable to understand the article topic. For example, if your article deals with class look at conflict theory.
The assignment should be 3-4 pages long – double spaced. Please use paragraphs and hand in your article. Make sure that you cite the information in your assignment and provide a bibliography. If you don’t do these steps it is considered plagiarism. If you have any questions, please let me know. This assignment is worth 15% of your final mark.

Summary & Relevance (8%)
You need to accurately summarize the article. Then you must talk about how the topic is
an important research issue and how studying it may be beneficial.
Accurate and complete = 6- 8%
Fairly accurate and complete = 4.5- 5.5%
Somewhat accurate and complete = 3- 4%
Not accurate or complete = 0 – 2.5%
Theory (15%)
You need to pick one or two appropriate theories that will help you understand your
sociological issue. One is fine. For example, use feminism for women’s issues,
functionalism, if your topic deals with the order and stability of society, conflict theory if
your topic deals with class differences etc. Make sure you use the concepts of the theory
you chose. We will be going through this in our on-line class.
Right theory and proper use = 12- 15%
Right theory and fairly accurate use = 9 -11.5%
Right theory and poorly used = 6- 8.5 %
Right theory but used incorrectly = 1- 5.5%
Structure and Grammar (5%)
Please make sure that you use proper grammar, such as past and present tenses. Spelling
is included here as well. For structure, please make sure your paper flows well and that
you start a new paragraph for each new idea.
