Watch four short videos that show how transportation in America changed over time(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odF4GSX1y3c), starting from two that document the shift from the rail to the car (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnFVBfhpprU) and ending with two showing the current resurgence of transit, at least in some places (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_Du6giZh6k) and (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RftqoygXXHk). Review a chapter from the book Planning Los Angeles, discussing the evolution of transportation in one of our country’s most car-dependent regions (file:///Users/maddie/Downloads/Boarnet%20-%20Back%20to%20the%20future%20in%20transportation%20planning-1.pdf). First, talk about how you get around town and why. In other words, briefly describe how the places where you live, study (or work), and play – as well as other factors such as transportation cost and convenience – influence the transportation mode choices. For example, do you have good public transit options to go from your home to the U? Or from your home to where you play sports or meet with friends? The second part of the point of view section is the most important one, and it actually includes your “point of view.” As the point of view/thesis, describe a city that makes using public transportation, biking, and walking easier and safer for you. What would make you take transit, bike, and walk more often? REFER TO AT LEAST 2 of the 4 videos & one reading.
