  • Review the following scenario based on an actual health care event: Karlie, a 35-year-old transgender female, entered the emergency department of St. Benedict Hospital with a chief complaint of severe abdominal pain. The patient registrar asked Karlie to complete the necessary paperwork needed to enter Karlie in the queue. When Karlie returned the paperwork to the patient registrar, the registrar noticed that Karlie indicated that her current gender identity is female, and her sex assigned at birth was male. The patient registrar asked Karlie to have a seat and stated that someone will be with them soon. Dr. Randle, after attending to a different patient, was standing near the patient registration area when he overheard the patient registrar and another employee talking about Karlie. Dr. Randle overheard the registrar state, “He or She will be waiting.” After several hours, Dr. Randle heard the registrar call out to the waiting room for “Karl.” When “Karlie” approached the desk, she asked the registrar to please address her as Karlie. The registrar dismissed Karlie’s request by stating, ‘we are required to address you by your birth name.” The next day, Dr. Randle reached out to the HR Director to inform the Director of what transpired.

For this discussion, you will assume the role of the HR Director.
