I will be back with your medications. I will shut the door behind me.” The patient’s physical needs are just as important as her spiritual and psychological needs. It is also important for the nurse to remain safe, do not argue with the patient. Being able to be a good self- monitor, is another way to watch for signs of increased safety risk as well as have time to prepare for a safe exit if needed during the conversation (Patterson, 2012). In the Emergency Department the staff often runs into a miscommunication with the providers. The doctor will say, “The nurse will be right in with your medications.” Or, “You are ready to go.” And the patient leaves without discharge instructions or seeing the nurse. With proper communication, a therapeutic relationship is possible. A standardized tool known as the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation) was recommended by Joint Commission in order to improve communication and improve patient outcomes (Kesten, 2011).
