Part 1: Notes on Broadcast & Outline for Media Analysis (worth 5 points)
Students should watch one current sport broadcast (i.e. NFL/NBA game, College football/basketball game; SportsCenter Episode, PTI, Around the Horn, College Gameday or another broadcast of your choosing). The broadcast should have aired within the last month.
Part 1a. Students should take careful notes on the broadcast. Some notetaking categories include:
Broadcasters (Anchors, Sideline Reporters)
– Who are the broadcasters? What is their background/reputation?
– Make note of what the announcer is saying, wearing, what they look like.
Crowd
– What kind of signs are being held up by the crowd? What are they chanting? Is a certain social class or social group being represented?
Players and Coaches
– What type of uniforms are they players wearing?
– How are the players intereacting with eachother and with coaches?
– What are the broadcasters saying about the players/coaches?
Social Media Conversation
– Attention should also be paid to the social media “conversation” surrounding the broadcast among fans and even players/coaches (i.e. Twitter, Instagram, TikTok).
– Is there a current event, holiday, or anniversary that is being talked about on social media in relation to the broadcast?
Part 1b. Students should then ANALYZE their notes.
– When analyzing you think about the topics we covered in Chp 5.
– think deeply about what your notes on what you they observed.
– Think: are any “subtle” messages being “sent”, are there any sociological themes/messages (e.g., race, gender, sexuality, social class, politics, religion, economic, patriotic, nationalistic) deployed throughout the course of the broadcast by commentators.
– Consider current events or other societal issues that may be occurring.
– What messages are the commercials sending as it relates to topics in Chp 5 or other topics such as social class, politics, religion, economics, patriotism, nationalism. (note: in your actual paper, limit discussion of commercials to 1 paragraph)
Part 1c. Using your notes and analysis of the notes, students should then create an outline of a paper. (use the worksheet from our class activity as a guide for your outline).
Part 2: First Submission (full length draft) for Media Analysis (worth 5 points)
In the second part of the assignment, students are to write a minimum 750-word (min) 1000-word (max) analysis of the broadcast as a whole that synthesizes your observations in a scholarly way. The paper should include a discussion and examples of at least 3 key word/concepts from the textbook. At least 2 of the 3 key word/concepts should be from Chapter 5 (these are the words in bold OR headings of sections within a chapter). In your paper, the key words/concepts should be in BOLD. The paper should include an Introduction, Body, and Conclusion. The writing should “flow” and be void of grammar mistakes. APA format should be used for in-text and end of text references. You do not need to use full APA format – just as it relates to citations and references. You should cite the textbook.
When analyzing the broadcast, each student should browse the articles/blog entries found at the links below and incorporate something they learned from one of the websites below in to their paper.

Your paper should include AT LEAST one properly cited reference to one blog/article from one of the websites above (more than 1 is fine).
In-text citations should be used (APA format); A reference list should be included (APA format).
