Literary essay thesis statement Select a literary selection and identify an issue related to the piece of literature you have selected. An issue is best described as a question with no obvious answer: After selecting a piece of literature and an issue, formulate a question based on the selection and the issue. Make a claim about the issue by answering the question you have constructed; this will be the topic of your literary essay. Use your claim to construct your thesis statement; the thesis must include your topic (from step three) and the literary selection, including the author’s name when available.
