Social privilege is a special advantage or entitlement, which benefits one person, often to the detriment of others. Privilege can be grouped in several ways: education, socio-economic status, age, height, weight, nationality, geographic location, disability, ethnic or racial category, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical attractiveness, religion, etc. Privilege is often linked to social and cultural forms of power. It is best understood as the inverse of social inequality, in that it focuses on how power structures in society aid societally privileged people, as opposed to how those structures oppress others.
After watching “Understanding Your Privilege,” consider what groups you are a part of that aid in your personal privilege. Write a 700-word essay, and answer the following
Define the privileged groups you belong to.
Explain how your privilege has impacted your worldview.
Is your privilege a direct result of the American Dream?
