MODULE 4 – Small Group Leadership Discussion

Group Leadership Discussion

Think about the last time you needed to work in a small group. What was it you were supposed to do, a project, an activity, plan an event, solve a problem, etc.? Was the end result of your working together productive or unproductive? Why do you think this was so? Were you the leader of the group? If not, could you tell who the group leader was? How? Did the direction the group took in terms of completing the task aligns with how you thought the task should be completed? Why or why not?

The last time I worked in a small group it was to plan a surprise baby shower/birthday party for a colleague earlier this year. A group of 5 of us got together and started planning the date, theme, and all of the details. It was a last minute decision which made it a more stressful situation, and it was quickly clear that I was going to be taking the lead in the group because I automatically took the initiative to gather the info needed and started delegating tasks to others. Everyone was very cooperative though and willing to complete the needed tasks. We were able to be very productive by completing tasks on time and communicating every day. It was definitely a group effort, one which required a leader with patience and efficiency.

The last time that I needed to work in a small group was when I was planning an event. The event was a surprise birthday party for one of my family members in Mexico. Since the entire family was together, we all thought that it was the perfect time to do it because the family was reunited and haven’t been together at a party in so long. Since we all came up with the idea, there was no particular person who was in charge or the leader of the event, since we all had a part in planning the event. We all had clear communication as to who was doing what, location, decor, etc. However, the party was planned perfectly and the person who was surprised felt the love and the positive energy coming from the entire family. The important thing about this event was having proper communication with each other so that we all understood and respected everyone’s opinions.
