You may be asking yourself, “Dr. Lindey, why are you having us do an assignment about the Eclipse?” Allow me to answer that for you.

Our class is studying humanity. Yes, we are looking at war, economics, politics, culture, gender, etc. You have seen how various events and happenings have led to one another and had impacts on people, effecting their humanity and lives for better or worse. This once in a generation event I believe is important to experience. Such an eclipse was used to test Einstein’s Theory of Relativity in 1919. Furthermore, there is something to be said about experiencing such natural wonders. When astronauts view Earth from space they sometimes experience something called the “Overview Effect.” This effect reveals to them that national boundaries, divisions, borders, etc. on Earth are all constructed and really we are one large planet and species. They understand the interconnectedness and some go on to start philanthropic endeavors after their return. Even when some experience the Grand Canyon for the first time, they cry. Maybe you have had similar experiences.

The path of the eclipse crosses over Indianapolis and Evansville and will at least partially be visible from surrounding areas. IUPUI has given you Monday, April 8th, the day of the eclipse, off. I encourage you to go outside and experience this event if you are able. I know some places are having viewing events like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That does cost money to attend. I am not requiring you to go there, but it is an option if it is open to the public (Purdue is selling tickets for example for $20). Perhaps have a picnic under the eclipse with your friends or go on a walk outside when it happens. Given this is an online class, if you are further away from the direct route of the eclipse and totality and cannot make it to view the event, I would like you still hear from you.

So, the reason you have read this far. What do I want you to do for this assignment? . There are plenty of sites to see around the area and view during the eclipse, even if it is just on campus. There will be live streams online I am certain if you cannot witness it in person. If you take pictures of totality occurring, you can submit those. You don’t have to be in the picture for these but show me that you are witnessing the event in some way. If you cannot take any pictures, tell me your thoughts of the event. I would like to see at least one paragraph (5 sentences about your viewing of the event). If you do take pictures I encourage you to still write something and reflect on the event. Believe me, I am certain you can all write more than 5 sentences. Perhaps the eclipse is important to your major if you do astronomy or space sciences. Maybe it inspires you in some way artistically.

The point here is to have you witness something cosmic and reflect on it. As we near the end of the semester this is more fun and relaxing than another quiz, plus a once in a lifetime opportunity (for you perhaps, and me as the one giving the assignment). If you have any questions, please reach out and let me know.
