Discussion 8
Hello class, for this discussion I chose the 2014 film 12 Years A Slave, first I would like to say the reason I chose this film is because I felt this film covered an important time in american history for African Americans. The film is directed by Steve McQueen and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong’o, Brad Pitt, and many other notable actors and actresses. The film is a biographical drama based on a screenplay by John Ridley based on the 1853 Slave Memoir 12 Years A Slave written by John Northrup himself. The story begins with Northrup being a free man in the state of New York working as a violin player getting swindled by two white men who offer him employment playing in Washington DC. They then drug him and take him to a “slave pen” and he ultimately ends up in New Orleans on a plantation. During his time on the plantation he goes through much of the unjust treatment, struggles, and brutality that come with being a slave and is moved through a couple different plantations as he tries desperately to send a letter to his friends in New York. Eventually he meets someone with enough humility to send the letter to his companions and is saved by the sheriff after realizing he was a free man from New York. Northrup is then returned to his family after undergoing 12 years of the savage reality that was slavery. This film is filled with many cruel and brutal scenes in which some critics complained about but this was the reality of those times. Upon debut the film earned over $187 million and had a budget of about $22 million. Along with winning the academy award, the film also received the golden globe award for best motion picture and The British Academy of Film and Television Arts also recognized it for best film. I believe this film won the oscar because it shined light on slaves being more than just that, and that we are all humans no matter the race I felt the film really hit home for most about the unfair conditions and mistreatment of black people at this time while shedding light on the legacy of Northrup. A famous quote from the movie is “Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live” hopefully that helps give an understanding of the message of the movie. Lastly an important milestone was achieved with this film, the first black brittish director and producer to ever receive the award for best film. lease respond to folowing
