The main idea of the essays is essentially that technology isn’t something we should always be constantly relying on. Which I tend to agree on considering how much of an influence it has on everyone and everything. Both of them give more specific examples of why they think we should be very cautious of the internet and all of its developing technology. In the article, “The case for making low-tech ‘dumb’ cities instead of ‘smart’ ones” it talks more about the development of technology for cities and how it could be a bad thing. It suggests that technology is constantly changing and being updated so it would cause a bigger cost in price as well as it has issues and isn’t always reliable. Imagine that we solely rely on this technology and it shuts down for a week that is going to drastically impact everyone around us and can cause a lot of very serious issues. It also proposes the idea to again not make these smart cities to benefit everyone so this article would fall under the idea of a proposal. The other article titled “Ditch the GPS. It’s Ruining Your Brain” takes a different argument talking about how it is going to affect our brains and they way we think. So it is considering a more health related approach to the use of technology. A quote from this article says “when people use tools such as GPS, they tend to engage less with navigation. Therefore, brain area responsible for navigation is less used, and consequently their brain areas involved in navigation tend to shrink.” So it not only would be dangerous for reasons of relying too much on technology but in the long run for our health as well which is a huge deal that people need to be able to focus on maintaining a happy and healthy life.
