Light, Color and Vision Workbook HW-23 Spring 2023

Homework 22: Image formation with multiple elements The Microscope: An object seen through two lenses. Each lens has a focal length of +4 blocks. Mark the

focal points. Next use the special rays and equations to determine the location and size of the image

created by the first lens. Then using the first image as the object for the second lens, once again use the

rays and equations with new values to determine the location and size of the final image.

Mathematical work for FIRST lens Mathematical work for SECOND lens

The F-stop: Draw the special rays from the point to find the image point for this lens (which has a focal

length of +6 units), and then add the rays that pass through the top and bottom of the lens, extending

them all to the gray screen (ignoring the aperture for the moment), and measure how much the rays

spread at the screen. Next draw only the rays that make it through the aperture, and determine how

much they have spread at the screen. Finally how a small aperture can make images look sharper.
