c. Explicitly state that the DNP Project Manuscript concerns an evidence-based intervention to improve healthcare outcomes. Improving healthcare should include variables of quality, safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, cost, efficiency, and/or equity, and it should include referenced statistics.

d. Explicitly state the practice problem and the purpose (aim) of the project.

  17. Text Field 26: Cardiac arrest on the labor unit is an uncommon occurrence, but it can have serious consequences for a mother and her fetus, as well as the nurses who provide care. Using simulation helps to improve performance of basic life support, including early defibrillation, in accordance with American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines. Simulations provide purposeful practice of all or a portion of a skill in cardiology (Al-Khatib et al., 2018). Timely defibrillation is part of the basic life support training widely used in healthcare settings (American Heart Association, 2022). Hundreds of thousands of patients require defibrillation to treat life-threatening arrhythmias and there is a need to increase the perception of confidence in nurses to improve basic life support techniques. Simulation training is an acceptable method of training and shows promise to improve staff-perceived confidence for managing emergencies in health care settings (Mitchell et al., 2020). The frequency of cardiac arrest episodes varies depending on the institution, which poses specific issues in terms of care due to differences in the responding team's make-up, comfort level, and expertise with procuring and using arrest equipment.
  18. Text Field 27: Simulation offers scheduled, appreciated learning experiences that are tough to attain in real life. Learners address hands-on and thinking skills, including knowledge-in-action, procedures, decision-making, and effective communication (SSIH, 2022). Although cardiac arrest on the labor unit is a rare, rapid defibrillation is essential for survival and one of the most important measures in saving a life from sudden cardiac arrest because a person's chances of survival decrease by 7–10% for each minute that they do not receive it (American Heart Association, 2022). There is a need for simulation, particularly in the labor and delivery arena, as delayed defibrillation is prevalent and is related with worse odds of survival following in-hospital cardiac arrest (American Heart Association, 2022). In simulation-based training, the student is immersed in a situation that has been crafted realistically inside a physical setting (Mitchell et al., 2020). Simulation can accommodate a range of learners from novices to experts. Beginners can gain confidence and “muscle memory” for tasks that then allow them to focus on the more demanding parts of care. Experts can better master the constantly growing array of new technologies without putting the first groups of patients at undue risk. At this practice site some complex diseases and emergencies simply do not present enough opportunities for practice, even to established clinicians (SSIH, 2022).

During weeks 1 and 10 each Labor and Delivery nurse would attend a simulated scenario. The SET-M tool would be administered to each participant nurse by DNP student after each scenario in weeks 1 and 10. Same scenario would be presented in weeks 1 and 10. The SET M results in week 1 will be used for pre implementation data. The SET M results in week 10 will be used for post implementation data. SET-M was tested and confirmed to be reliable and valid in measuring student perception of learning. The analysis was completed using the following four subscales, prebriefing, learning, confidence, and debriefing. All subscales were identified with reliable consistency. The SET was created in 2005, and updated to be in line with INACSL Standards of Best Practice, QSEN practices, and American Association of Colleges of Nursing baccalaureate essentials (Leighton, et al., 2015). Planning assumptions, procedures, operational plans and guidelines and standard operating procedures will be reviewed and assessed. Week 2-9: The DNP student will attend nursing huddles three times per week and round on the labor and delivery unit for verbal review of basic life support techniques in the Labor and Delivery arena. DNP student will create a case study weekly to review in person with nurses on the labor and delivery unit. Week10: The DNP student will have each nurse attend a simulation that is the same scenario from week. The SET-M tool will be given after completion and used as post assessment. Data analysis will begin.
