This assignment gives you the opportunity to interview a nurse practitioner working in the field. It also helps you begin a list of resources you will be able to share with your future patients.
Instructions
Part I
Prepare to interview a nurse practitioner. You can interview any nurse practitioner except acute care.
Identify a vulnerable population within your community.
Reach out to an NP working with that population (for example: in the prison system or with the homeless). If you have difficulty finding an NP to work with, please contact your instructor.
Prepare at least 7 interview questions for the NP. Be creative – what do you want to know about working with this vulnerable population?
This can include one question about their educational background,
one about what inspired them to work with this vulnerable population,
others can include how they approach patients within this population and how (and if) it differs from how they approach other patients in their practice.
Please include one question to learn if the interviewee has insight into how the SDOH impacts this population (economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhood and build environment, social and community context).
You may write up a summary. During the interview, offer the NP your insight into your hopes for a change in one SDOH for this population.
Part II
After the interview, submit a written reflection after your interview and share how the NP has inspired you, surprised you, or disappointed you. Also include the biggest take-away from your conversation. Include NP name and practice setting. This does not have to be in APA format.
Part III
Identify at least four local agencies and community referrals within your community you would be able to provide for the vulnerable population you discussed with your NP interviewee. Submit the following for each referral:
name of organization,
address and main contact person, and
explain how this organization helps the specific vulnerable population. Include mission statement if available.
