Part 1: Ways of Knowing

Instructions: Below are three different types of ways of knowing that you would engage in throughout your time in college. Please write down the different actions that you would take, in the corresponding columns, to answer these questions. Then answer each question below.

EVERYDAY WAYS OF KNOWING

This type of knowing is what you do when you are curious about an everyday subject. For example, if you are curious about how to save money. Explain the steps you would take research how to save money.

PAPERS FOR A COLLEGE COURSE

This type of knowing is what you do to help describe, inform or formulate a sound argument for a given topic for a term paper for a given class. For example, should college athletes get paid. Explain the steps you would take to research information about the arguments you would make for this paper.

COMMUNICATION RESEARCH

This type of knowing is discovering new or unknown information about a given topic of interest. For example, what is the relationship between instructor misbehaviors and student’s in-class engagement? Explain the steps you would take to prove that the relationship between these two behaviors.

Part 2: Proprietary Research

Instructions: Proprietary research is not always known about because it is usually hidden from public view. However, employees with research skills will quickly separate themselves from other employees because many organizations value those talents. To help you grasp the breadth and variety of proprietary research, complete the following one of the following tasks:

1. Interview two managers (at least at midlevel, if possible) about the research efforts or research needs of their companies; or

2. Select two or three well known organizations and do a search for research they post on their websites.
