Topic 1:
Compare and contrast the two war poems: "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and "Dulce et Decorum Est." What is the tone of the first poem? What is the tone of the second poem? What words, phrases, or images in each poem support your interpretation of the poem? What factor or factors, in your view, contribute to the difference in their tones?
Topic 2:
What feelings does Whitman express towards the locomotive? What qualities does he see in the locomotive? What does the locomotive represent for him? Write an essay describing three or four literary techniques such as imagery, personification, and symbolism the poet employs to express his feelings.
Structure:
The essay should have at least 900 word, but no more than 1200 words.
- In your introduction, give an overview of the topic and state your thesis clearly. 100 words.
- Organize your body paragraphs in a logical manner. You should write at least three body paragraphs. 700-800 words.
- Start your body paragraphs with a topic sentence. Support your topic sentences with words, phrases, or/and images from the poem. Do not use too many examples. Do not simply list the examples. You need to explain why the words, phrases, and/or images you choose support your interpretation.
- Summarize your analysis and evaluate the poems in your conclusion. 100 words.
