What is the foundation of ethics? We’ve gone over various options, including that option that there is no real foundation (and therefore no real ethics). Please argue your stance.
Directions:
Do not write an intro paragraph longer than 3 sentences. Write a solid thesis statement concerning the foundation of ethics. Generally speaking, there are four main options: Utilitarianism, Deontology, Virtue, or that there is no foundation (Mackie). Pick one. Argue for it. Do not fence sit.
You’ll need to describe and define all the necessary background knowledge. You might repeat a little bit from your first paper, but don’t plagiarize yourself. For the sake of a comprehensive course, you must describe Mackie, Rand, or Aristotle in the description section.
You’ll need to demonstrate your argument presenting your reasons for your accepting your thesis, and try to convince others about why they should agree with you. This part does not need to be lengthy, but it does need to be very clear and have great direction.
You need to include at least one reason why someone might object to your thesis, and respond to that objection. The objection should probably have already been hinted at in your description. Explain why that reason does not change your mind or does not invalidate the reasons you gave in your argument section.
You may include a concluding paragraph if you wish. If you noticed, none of the readings I have assigned included concluding paragraphs. I told you it’s not a thing in philosophy! We’re weirdos. But also, if it makes you comfortable, go for it.
This should take 4 pages, maybe more. Don’t plagiarize.
