What leader behaviors were most important for reducing AMC’s CLABSI rates? At the executive level? At the unit level?
Multiple people’s behaviors go into effect when reducing AMC’S CLABSI rates. Most importantly, at the unit level, the ICU team’s behavior primarily affects the infection rate reduction. This is because in years prior the infection rate was out of control and the ICU teams implemented ways to reduce them and were successful. At the executive level, you could argue the governor’s behaviors were most important because she was the one to call attention to the rates. But in avoiding controversy I would say that Kristen Dempsey led the organization to make significant progress toward improving health safety and reducing infection rates.
How was information used to facilitate improvements in CLABSI rates?
Information was used to facilitate improvements in CLABSI rates by producing reports indicating ays without CLABSI infections for each unit every month. The group also decided that these unit-based reports, along with an aggregated report of days without infections across units, would be presented at the CLABSI work group’s monthly meetings.
As an administrator at AMC, what would you be concerned about in the coming year for CLABSI prevention? How about two years from now?
As an administrator at AMC, I would be concerned that if AMC went over a year without an infection, staff would begin to become lazy and slip up on the tight protocols they have been following. About two years from now, I would also be concerned that newly hired staff members will not follow the protocol as closely as everyone else, causing an infection to arise.
