You will compose a short formal essay narrating a single story which embodies or reveals a social issue; select a non-fiction story, narrate the story from a first- or third-person point of view, with a rhetorical purpose intended to shed light on the problem or a solution to that problem.
In your narrative, focus on a single episodeone small occurrence or experiencethat embodies the significance of the social problem or its solution to a modern audience; the body of the essay should consist of fully-formed narrative example.
This is not a story about a person’s whole life, or an entire social issue; it’s also not an informative essay about a social issue. It’s a story. Just to be clear: this is not a book report. It is not an essay of extended exposition. This is a STORY, or narrative. Don’t simply tell me about what happened. Put the reader in that moment (see my 1301 Announcement “Social Issue Example” for detail).
